Until recently, Nintendo kept the specifications confidential. Now that they have been given to software developers they're now available for study which allows us to determine exactly what we're getting for our money and appreciate the underlying superiority of the product.

The CPU, named Broadway, was developed and manufactured in association with IBM. It works at 729 Mhz with a bandwidth of 1.9 gigabytes per second. The graphics processing unit was made by ATI with a rated speed of 243 Mhz. It is available with 3 megabytes of graphics memory and twenty four megabytes of high-speed main memory. The external main memory is sixty four megabytes of GDDR3 (MEM2) and is reachable by the CPU and GPU at a speed of four GB per second.

The console is very small. It is 8.5 inches high, 6 inches broad, and just under 2 inches deep. Even with the stand it does not occupy much room and can be placed vertically or horizontally.

The optical disc drive can be used with the recent 12cm single-sided double-layered game discs for the Wii, in addition to the older 8cm GameCube discs. When a GameCube disc is inserted, the console electronically changes the speed to the needs of the game. The drive reads at a speed equal to the speed of DVD 6X. Inserting a disc electronically turns on the console, and turning it off electronically ejects the disc. All these features are advances in game technology.

The console supports a number of peripheral appliances. It can process input from four controllers simultaneously. For backwards compatibility with the previous console it has ports to connect to four GameCube
